This is a weird season for me. My normal routine has been largely ripped away, and I find myself hidden on a mountain with infinite possibilities, and nearly no responsibilities. The last couple weeks brought clear confirmation about what to be doing with this time - write music! But also relief from the internal guilt and drive to do more than what the Lord has been asking. I am almost three months in, and haven't accomplished nearly what was in my heart to do. One of the main things I have purposed is to write a series of secular songs as an autobiography (which I don't intend to share here). So far, I have one of those 90% complete, and another with just lyrics. Not much to show for in the list of fifty or so ideas I have.
Yesterday, in my renewed peace, I spent some time just worshiping the Lord from my original songs. That involved me flipping through a notebook which also contains many unfinished and potential works. After worship, I flipped through a bit of the extra fodder, and left my notebook open in my office when I left. This morning, was a little off kilter, so when I went to my office, I decided to grab my guitar. Sitting next to the open book, I just began plucking on some chords while singing. After a minute, I thought I should probably record and write down what I was doing so it wouldn't be lost. That's how this morning a 12-year-old poem was transformed into a song. It didn't take a lot of effort, it just emerged. I don't think I can truly understand how sculptors can see a block of marble and uncover the image inside, but I do have that feeling that I uncovered something that pre-existed my intervention.
The Lord is so gracious to let me uncover melodies and rhythm and lyrics. Hope he isn't wasting the good stuff on low-ability me! At any rate, the chord chart for Misfit Army is now available for download.
